Thursday night
61cm Urban Barramundi #813
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL

It's a Mindil Beach Market Day tonight.
So I couldn't fish there.
I had to go to Fannie Bay.
I caught a 71cm nice barramundi at Fannie Bay last night.
But I caught a 61cm barramundi at the different spot tonight.

Mongrel did work again!
It's a very fun lure.
It's very easy to cast and control.

I caught this 61cm barramundi at the tide of going out again.
The real barramundi season has come.
I hope more nice monsoon rains.

71cm Urban Barramundi #812
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL
The real season has come!

We had some nice monsoon rains recently.
I think the real barramundi season has come in Darwin.

I caught two small barramundis at Mindil Beach first.
And then I went to Fannie Bay.

The tide was going out.
The water was clear.
The surface of the sea was wavy.
I liked that condition.

I chose a SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL tonight.
I used a jig-head of 1/4oz. #1/0 as a substitute for MONGREL's genuine hook.
Strictly speaking, the genuine hook should be much better.
But it's very hard to find a genuine hook now.

This nice sized barramundi was caught around two hours before the lowest tide of the day.
Outgoing tide!
That means that the activity of barramundi has been getting higher.

Barramundi #810-811
RAPALA XRD 08

RAPALA XRD-08 / GLASS GHOST is a really good lure for catching a small - meddle sized barramundi.

The tides were good today.
The water was clear.
The surface of the sea was wavy.
That's nice condition!

68cm Urban Barramundi
Sweetrip
Mr. Brett Parsons

We had some nice rains recently.
I heard that some friends of mine caught nice fishes by land based.

I received e-mail from Mr. Brett Parsons.
He caught Mangrovejack, Flathead, Mackerel, Sweetrip, Reefcod and Barramundi.
That's very nice results!
I thought that he really enjoyed his land based fishing very much.
Seeing his results, probably, he mainly wanted to fish barramundi.
I was surprised at mackerel he caught by land based.
He used bait-cast rod and reel.
It's a very nice technique!

According to Brett's e-mail,

Hi mate,

Yes I caught the sweet lip at xxxxx. It was a very big fish and was taking drag.

Cheers

8'6" bait casting long rod carried to the rock.
Barramundi #809
Rockcod #304
SQUIDGY FISH

The 6' bait casting rod reached only half way in an against windy day.

The progress of technology has brought about great changes in our land based fishing.

The 8'6" bait casting long rod carried to the big rock.
The lure reached the rock at last.
To be accurate, the lure went over the rock.

I couldn't keep hooking a strong barramundi at this point when I used a spinning rod with 14lb braid line.
The 14lb braid line got caught  the rocks covered with many sharp oysters.
And then the line broke off.

I found a 8'6" bait casting long rod at Fishing and Outdoor World.
It was thought that I could lift and move a strong barramundi over the big rock.
I imagined a crane.

As a result, I lifted and moved this strong barramundi over the big rock covered with many sharp oysters.

25 Oct 2013

There were some questions about the surface condition of the water.

I received some e-mails as follows,
Why is the slightly wavy surface of the sea very good for catching barramundi on the shallows?

They probably believe that the flat surface should be better than the slightly wavy surface.

As it turns out, a barramundi will take baits even under the flat surface condition of the water if there is a place fitting the body size of a barramundi where a barramundi stays while watching and waiting.

In other words, barramundi prefer to make a surprise attack from structures when the sea is flat or slightly rippled.  It's the same as bushwhacking guerrillas attacking from ambush.

The above picture shows the difference of their tail fins.

Trevally, Tarpon and Queenfish often take their baits under the condition of the flat surface of the sea.
Their tail fins do work.
They can hunt by stalking in any conditions.

On the other hand, barramundi is not good at hunting by stalking.
They are good at hunting by ambushing.
However, they can hunt by stalking under the conditions as follows,
  • Rippled, slightly wavy and wavy surface of the sea
  • Strong water current
  • Water quality without good visibility
  • Deep water
  • Night time

Sea Barramundi

There are not many places where a good sized barramundi can stay while watching and waiting on our shallows on shore.
There aren't very many places like that on the shallows around Darwin.
There are some places where small sized barramundis can stay while watching and waiting on our shallows.
Therefore, we sometimes catch small barramundis under the condition of the flat surface of the sea.
Those small barramundis should be dark in colour because it depends on the their living environments.

The small and dark-colour barramundis stay in horizontal hollows fitting their body sizes of oyster-rocks in intertidal zone.
Normally, they make 2 small round trips between the shallow water and the deep water every day.
They hunt by ambushing even under the condition of the flat surface of the sea.
They take lures at its meeting passing with each other.

In contrast, a nice sized barramundi wanders wide water and the body becomes bright sliver in colour.

They won't come to our shallows under the condition of the flat surface of the sea.

However, we will have a very good season for catching a barramundi from now on.
We can catch a nice sized barramundi with a top-water lure under the condition of the flat-surface water.
It's a good timing to catch a nice sized barramundi just before dusk.

River Barramundi and Billabong Barramundi

There are many places where a good sized barramundi can stay while watching and waiting in a river or billabong as follows,
  • Shade of a tree
  • Sloping terrain
  • Very uneven bottom
  • Dead tree
  • Water plant
  • Deep water
  • Water quality without good visibility
  • Water hole
  • Water current
  •  Mud drains into the river
A nice sized barramundi can hunt by ambushing even under the condition of the flat surface of the water in a river or billabong.

Barramundi will take lures in the shade of a tree on the shallow water in a river or billabong.
You can lure barramundi out of the shade of a tree with your experienced technique.

Barramundi #808
YO-ZURI SS MINNOW

I got up late and so missed the best timing today for catching a barramundi this morning.

I didn't like the incoming tide today.
But I used a very, very good lure for the shallow water.
After all, I didn't avoid this barramundi's hit.

Not coral spawns
Those greens are growing on the oyster-rocks.

True, I saw a long belt of coral spawns on our shallows.
It smelled something.
It's green in colour.
That's not rare here.┐(~ー~;)┌

I always said that many oyster-rocks were covered with these green plants.
Those greens are growing now.
Those are not coral spawns.
It is thought that an unwelcome environment has started at East Point.

These greens are growing on the oyster-rocks.
Many oysters are weakened or killed.
In addition, similar greens are growing on the mud in the mangroves as well.
  • Eutrophication of water area
  • Harmful Algal Bloom????
We need good monsoon rains now.

Thank you very much.

Keith came to the land based barramundi fishing!
61cm Urban Barramundi
Mr. Keith Watson

His nice barra boat was holed by a big crocodile.

Keith Watson woke with a shock when a croc sunk its teeth through his fishing boat
I thought, that is especially why Keith came to the land based barramundi fishing in CBD.

Originally, he is a famous person who is an expert sharp-caster.
He is a master of the lure-casting.

Probably, he happened to be on facebook at that time.
Probably, just before his going to Sydney.

I asked him to send me his recent fishing results.

I received his message.

I got a nice 61cm on xxxxx... xxxxx I got 2 small ones, dropped a 60cm and missed 3 more strikes from good barras...

My fishing gear mainly used on landbase is a GLoomis GL2 spin rod with a twinpower 2500 size spin reel loaded with 10lb suffix braid.
I also use a GLoomis Mossyback spin rod with a shimano stradic 2500 Ci4 spin reel also loaded with suffix 10lb braid...
This outfit is for on the flats as it is longer...
I recently purchased a Samaki Zing spin rod for the same and the photos above of the barras in the water r the first fish for that rod....
I have been using Zerek live shrimp lures lately which have been working well

☆⌒(*^-゚)v Thanks!! Keith.

Sunday afternoon
Barramundi #807
K-Ten Special

Today's tides were not attractive.
But it's windy day.
It was thought that there should be a chance to catch a barramundi when the surface of the sea became wavy. (Not very wavy)

As a result, I caught a barramundi with a K-Ten lure again.

The surface condition of the sea is very important factor to catch a sea-barramundi on the shallows.
Please don't misunderstand that.
I always mean it in the case of the sea-barramundi.

River-barramundi and billabong-barramundi will take a lure under the condition of the flat surface.
It's very easy to understand the reasons why.

Saturday evening
Barramundi #806
K-Ten Special

Normally, October should be one of the best season for the land based barramundi fishing in Darwin.
But we didn't have a good monsoon season last time and so we are still in a slightly slow season now.

It is thought that we have to choose the point where we fish from various points of views
Do you smell bad on our urban shallows?
We probably have no very good sewage treat plant and sewage disinfection system.
Originally, we had a very good monsoon rains and so we didn't need to find the truth.
We could do quite well without it.

I saw many oysters covered with some green plants.
I saw green mud in intertidal zone.
It smelled strange chlorine.
Especially East Point.

The absolute number of our urban barramundis is much smaller than 2011.
Therefore, we need a something special to catch a barramundi on our urban shallows.

I have just started using my treasured lure.
It's a K-Ten lure.
I found it at the special second hand shop in Tokyo.

As a result, I caught a 56cm barramundi at noon today and a following barramundi this evening.
