Catfish #49
52cm Barramundi #1188
Queenfish #31

Sunday on December 23,
Location: Fannie Bay rocks
Fish: Catfish
Lure: Zerek Flat Shad 110mm
Lure colour: White mainly
The sea was slightly wavy.
The water was dirty with the coral spawn.
It rained heavily on the previous day.
The sea barramundi don't like this water condition on shore.
By contrast, the catfish will take lures in this water condition.
As expected, I caught a catfish.
The hook was bent and broken by this catfish.

Monday on December 24,
Location: Channel Island
Fish: Barramundi
Lure: Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm
Lure colour: Dark blue mainly
There was a dirty water with the coral spawn in a very shallow water side.
There was a clean water across the dirty water.
I cast the lure to the clean water side.
I used Squidgies S-Factor as a fish-feeding stimulant.
As a result, I caught a 52cm barramundi after 3 weeks.

Tuesday on December 25,
Location: Channel Island
Fish: Queenfish
Lure: Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm
Lure colour: White mainly
The water was very dirty with the fresh water as a result of the heavy rain on the previous day.
I had to cast the lure to a clean water across the dirty water.
I caught a queenfish.

I thought it would be best to concentrate on improving casting distance for the land based fishing on lure.

Sunny and windy December

My fishing column has been serialized in NTNews and Sunday Territorian from 2012.
Your generosity is appreciated very much.
On the other hand, I have never experienced such a sunny and windy December as this.
I found it difficult to fish barramundi in my usual fishing locations at the beginning of December.
The conditions haven't necessarily become better in spite of the steady sunny weather.
This steady sunny weather in December might have trouble fishing barramundi.
There exists no firm evidence.
Actually, this problem is unexpectedly serious to me.
The shallow sea is too wavy to fish barramundi every day.

I think that there are more windy days in December than in the average year.
In addition, the sea water was excessively turbid on shore.
I saw the mass coral spawn slicked on the sea surface.
The sea barramundi love the murky water.
I think that the sea barramundi don't like the dirty water.
The coral spawn on the sea surface itself doesn't negatively effect the barramundi fishing.
While there might be some exceptions, the sea barramundi wouldn't come to the shallow water when the sea water was clouded as with the coral spawn, especially in the wavy sea.

Washed up coral spawn at Mindil Beach.
There was a crocodile sighting along the Nightcliff to Casuarina Beach recently.
It's might be a healthy sign in the environment, however.
And yet I'm not convinced of it.
That's why I want to go fishing at Barramundi Adventures Darwin in these days.
Barramundi Adventures Darwin is a land-based, catch and release barramundi fishing farm.

Unfavorable conditions

As a result, I haven't been able to catch any barramundi for a week.
There are some complex elements that are considered to be the cause of that.
As I wrote this last week as follows, a strong wind from the sea blows in the afternoon at this time of year in my usual fishing locations.
However, a strong wind from the sea blew in the morning too this last weekend.
It's not good condition for the land based barramundi fishing.
Saturday morning on December 8, I could traveled through many traffic signals without stopping to the Channel Island.
Strictly speaking, I stopped only one traffic signal on the way to the Channel Island.
I thought "I'm lucky today."
Arriving at the Channel Island, I found the shallow water was very dirty.
Normally, sea-barramundi won't come to the shallow water with many fallen leaves etc. floating at the sea surface.
There were many fallen leaves on the water.
In addition, I saw the floating spawns of the coral at sea in profuse amounts.
As a result, I couldn't catch any fish there.
It's very windy in the afternoon as expected.
Sunday morning on December 9, I went fishing at Mindil Beach rocks.
Unfortunately, the strong wind had already started blowing.
The seawater was very dirty.
I saw the floating spawns of the coral there.

As a result, I couldn't catch any barramundi there.
It's windy in the evening on Monday and Tuesday.
9 am on Thursday is the deadline for my fishing column in Sunday Territorian.
It's windy in the evening on Wednesday too.
Even so, I had to go fishing.

I didn't had any fish bites on my lures at all.
The rumble of distant thunder was a signal that a lightning storm was approaching.
The rain came down in buckets as expected.
I'm more afraid of the stroke of lightning than of the crocodile attack.
I couldn't catch any barramundi this last week after all.

Unfavorable conditions
  • Very windy
  • Floating fallen leaves
  • Floating spawns of the coral
It cannot be helped.
Including this, such is the land based barramundi fishing.

Barramundi #1186-1187
54cm Barramundi #1188
Zerek Live Shad
Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow
Zerek Live Cherabin

Do you think it will be sunny all day?
It is often heavy rain with thunder in this season.
Even if it is clear, it is hard to fish in the heat in the afternoon.
Also, a strong wind from the sea blows in the afternoon at this time of year in my usual fishing locations.
That's why I went fishing in the morning.
Saturday on December 1, I went fishing at Myilly Point rocks.
The seawater was very muddy in colour.
The tide was coming into the shallow.
Firstly, I used Zerek Live Shad 110mm having a white colour.
I believe that a white colour works for the milky water in the rainy season in lure.
As a result, I caught and released a small barramundi.

The level of the seawater was rising little by little.
Secondly, I used Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm having a silver colour.
It's a very reliable lure in the shallow water.
As a result, I caught and released a small barramundi.

When the seawater level increased further, I used Zerek Live Cherabin 100mm having a white colour.
I hooked a barramundi but missed that fish.
Soon, I hooked a better barramundi in size.
It's a 54cm barramundi.
As you know, 55cm is the minimum overall length in our barramundi fishing.
I released that fish.

Barramundi #1185
Catfish #48
Golden Snapper #21
Rockcod #343
Blue Salmon #8
Trevally #49

Though it's Wednesday, the Channel Island was very crowded with fishing people.
I should avoid fishing locations where people crowd.
Thursday on November 22, I went fishing at Fannie Bay rocks.
There wasn't anyone at this place but me.
I used a 6'6" medium-action fishing rod.
Usually, a medium-action fishing rod is cheaper than a fast-action fishing rod.
I think a medium-action fishing rod useful for beginners.
You can enjoy lure fishing at reasonable price.
The result will be better than you expected.
As a result, I caught a catfish, golden snapper, rockcod and barramundi on Zerek Live Cherabin 100mm having a white colour.

Thursday on November 23, I went fishing at Mindil Beach rocks.
The weather of the wet season is unstable.
The thunder was rolling in the distance.
I used Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm having a gold colour.
I used a 8'6" long-sized medium-action fishing rod.
As a result, I caught a 50cm blue salmon.
This fish was a good fighter.

Soon, the thunderstorm broke.
I didn't want to be struck by lightning.

Sunday on November 25,
I went fishing at a place near my place.
As was to be expected, there were not many people there.
I used Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm and 8'6" long-sized medium-action fishing rod again.
As a result, I caught a 50cm GT.
This fish was very tenacious.

50cm Giant Trevally

Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm

I made sushi with GT.
I had normal sushi and zuke-sushi for a late lunch.
The flesh in fish that was marinated in soy sauce and mirin seasoning with a little ginger.

When making sushi, forming of bite sized sweet-vinegar rice is the highlight for sushi chef to show his technique.

Barramundi #1183-1184
Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm
81cm Barramundi by Mr. Matt Cook

My favorite tide is often asked if there are spring tide and neap tide.
My favorite tide is often asked if there are high tide and low tide.
I basically don't have my likes and dislikes in tide.
I think that, if the tide-water is moving, the barramundi will take lures when conditions are right.
After all, the best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
Saturday on November 17, I went back to a shallow water near town after a nearly 4 year absence.
It's very neap tide.
The water current was going out very slowly.
I hooked two barramundi while I was wading nearly knee-deep in water.
As a result, I could catch and release one barramundi on Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm.

Tuesday on November 20, I went fishing at Channel Island with my very good fishing friend, Matt Cook (Cookie).
Cookie is really good at fishing barramundi.
There was a moderately fast water current.
He was using Zerek Live Cherabin 100mm.
His retrieval speed of the lure is basically faster than you expected.
Unfortunately, the midges were bothering us.
If you are bitten by a midge, the bite itches badly, aches slightly and continuously.
The midges are worse than the sand flies in damage.
In addition, Cookie's knee hurt and my lower-back also hurt.
In such a situation, he caught a 81cm nice barramundi.

My efforts didn't pay off.
It started thundering.
Cookie and I gave up fishing.
There was a very short rain too.
I heard that someone caught a 71cm barramundi after we left there.
A short shower brings us a big chance to catch barramundi on a sunny day.

Wednesday on November 21, I went fishing at East Point rocks during the incoming tide.
I caught and released a small barramundi on Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm.

To bring out the potential of Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm
Barramundi #1182

I was hesitating to go fishing with my lower-back hurting.
On the other hand, I was panting to have a go at a new fishing rod.
I went fishing at Buffalo creek after work.
It was about 20minutes away from my place by my 150cc scooter.
Buffalo creek provides many places for the general public to simply enjoy fishing with ease and attract them to the fishing.
When Darwin had a small population, the poo-shooter brought about a good result of fishing.
This causes damage way more than it does profit.
I want to think that Buffalo creek is not what it used to be.
The tidal water was coming into the creek.
My new fishing rod is Samurai Refraction 6'6" Very Fast 10-17lb having a thinner and lighter constitutive elements.
Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm has achieved many good fishing results in my usual fishing locations.
I started using this fishing rod in order to bring out the potential of Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm.
I think that a fishing rod has a very significant leadership role to play in bringing out the potential of lures.
I have a big container full of lures at home.
In addition, I have many fishing rods.
The first tool I need to decide on has to be a combination of fishing rod and lure corresponding to the fishing location.
The second tool I need to decide on has to be a combination of fishing reel and line system.
As a result, I couldn't land a 50cm barramundi, but I could catch and release a very small barramundi.
It seems that my attempt has gone well in this case.
Not bad!

53cm Barramundi #1180
50cm Barramundi #1181
Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm

It was raining on Friday night.
The rocks were slippery at Myilly Point.
I was worried about the bad influence of the rain water to the seawater in my usual fishing locations.
My expectation came true.
I nearly fell down on the rocks.
I always walk with a stick during my fishing time.
There are several reasons for that.
I have a backache.
There is a danger of falling and getting injured.
Using the stick with a pipe and cap made of PVC 20mm in diameter, I can safely walk while recognizing the state around the feet in the seawater as a measure against stingray and stonefish.
As a result, I could catch and  release a 53cm barramundi on Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm.

53cm Barramundi

The next day, I went fishing at East Point rocks.
The seawater was 30cm - 50cm deep, very shallow.
As you know, Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm has gained an absolute trust in me in the case of the shallow-water fishing.
I caught and released trevally and barramundi there.
It is very, very important that the fishing rod must get along well with the lure.

54cm and 50cm Barramundi #1178-1179
Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm

I have gotten terrible lower back pain for a month.
So I'm wearing a belt for back pain in the lower back.
I feel a pain in the lower back each time a vibration transmitted to the lumber vertebra while I'm riding my scooter.
In addition, the heat makes me feel listless.
However, I still can walk so I won't be racked with suffering on the bed.
I want to go fishing!
I think that my passion for fishing barramundi on lures should be too strong.
My muscles weaken, but my passion for the barramundi fishing strengthen, with age.
Saturday, I went fishing at Channel Island.
There was a strong water current.
The water level momently changed.
The fishing spot having a productive fishing window changed 10 minutes by 10 minutes.
Unfortunately, I was caught in a badly calm water.
The shallow water was influenced by rainwater and fallen leaves of mangroves.
It happened just once.
A barramundi took my lure.
My lure was Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90 mm of green tinged with silver.
I hooked and landed that fish somehow.
My lower back hurt.

54cm barramundi

Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm

Sunday, I went fishing at Channel Island again.
Unfortunately, I was caught in a badly windy condition.
Immediately, I hooked a big fish on my lure.
A big fish swayed its head from side to side.
A big fish turned out to be a shark.
As ill luck would have it, I fought a hooked shark for five minutes.
My lower back hurt very much.
Worse, the shark took my important lure of Maria MJ-1F away.
After a while, I hooked a 50cm barramundi.
My lure was Yo-zuri Pin's Minnow 90mm of gold.
